Description

We are celebrating autumn in this issue, and hope that we can help you extend the show of colour in your garden right through the golden light of autumn with Joanne Evans’ floral suggestions which sit alongside Dougal Philip and Lesley Watson’s advice to make the most of seating areas in the garden, Katie Reynolds’ design ideas for ensuring cohesion between your indoor and outdoor space, and Scott Smith’s masterclass in dividing herbaceous perennials to make more plants to enjoy.

Autumn is one of the most bountiful times of the gardening year as Cairi Balmain shows us from her Shetland garden, while Janice Clyne helps us up our fermenting game to make sure nothing from the veg garden is wasted. There are still plenty of things that can be sown and grown as we move into autumn, as well as free gifts from the garden which Katrina Gelderbloem encourages us to put to good use. It’s also time to think about showing off your best homegrown produce and plants at one of the many horticultural shows up and down the country and Calum Clunie offers us his best tips for the show bench.

We love to get out and about around Scotland and inside this issue you’ll find us visiting a plantsman’s garden in Dalswinton, a wildflower meadow in the Lothians, the relocated Down’s Syndrome Scotland Garden, and Scotland’s garden vying to be awarded Historic Houses Garden of the Year. You’ll also find the first in our new series on how to leave a garden you love with Lizzie Schofield’s reflection on Cuthbert’s Brae, her much-loved former garden on the Moray coast.

Gardens though, don’t stand still, and it’s time to think about next spring’s display of blooms by getting ahead with our guide to autumn bulb buying, and when the weather does turn as it inevitably will, you can raise your indoor growing game by picking up Julianne Robertson’s houseplant tips.

It’s another bumper issue, which we hope delivers a great big dose of autumn gardening goodness for you.
